Corruption looks like…
Recognising corruption and its impact
In South Australia, we use the term ‘corruption’ to describe a range of criminal activity where individuals abuse the power entrusted to them for private gain.
While you can read the legal definition of corruption here, ICAC’s ‘Corruption looks like…’ materials are designed to unpack what conduct meets this serious threshold, and how it impacts our communities.
Would you recognise corruption if you encountered it?
Corruption can look like a public officer:
- Seeking or accepting a bribe for a favourable outcome
- Giving out jobs to family and friends
- Selling confidential information obtained through work
- Favouring a mate’s business in a procurement process
- Stealing public resources.
Reporting corruption
Are some of our examples sounding all too familiar? Public officers – that is, employees and contractors of South Australian public authorities – are required by law to report all reasonable suspicions of corruption to the Office for Public Integrity. Reporting isn’t always easy, but it’s the right thing to do.
